THE 68′ – Apartments at Hemisfair

As part of the overall Hemisfair Masterplan as proposed back in 2012, part of the redevelpment includes reintroducing residential living as the site prior to the Fair was a residential neigbhorhood. The first of which is a 151 unit apartment building designed by Lake / Flato Architects and developed by AREA Real Estate.

The site for the new housing / parking facility is located on the southside of Hemisfair, with the U.S. Federal Courthouse (U.S. Pavilion during HemisFair 68′) to the east & Yanaguana Garden (HPARC – Phase 1) to its west.

The site

During the six month run of HemisFair 68′ the site was part of thr foriegn nations area known as “Las Plazas Del Mundo”. More specificaly the site housed the national pavilions of XXXXXX & XXXXXX, the padesterain walkway between the two pavilions lined up with the western enterance into the U.S. Pavilion.

Sometime after the Fair closed the site was cleared and made into a surface parking lot to accomodate those working at the U.S. Federal Courthouse complex (originaly built as the U.S. Pavilion for HemisFair 68′).

As part of the site preperations, there were three existing structures which were evaluated for historic reference & possible revitalization at a later time. Two of the three were identified as being pre-Fair; one was relocated to a position next to the Women’s Pavilion and the other was left in-place just north of the new building. The third structure was identified as not being pre-Fair and was removed from the new construction site.
